ETSAKOR PROVERBS

ETSAKOR DIALECT:
Tsi otor, or kha somhi vhi ime; a ge gwa li ighele eva.

TRANSLATION:
If a piece of land is productive for farming, it is cultivated twice.

MEANING:
The Proverb here recommends that a piece of fertile land could be cropped for two seasons before it is left to go fallow.

LIFE APPLICATION:
  This Proverb is connected to agriculture. But that notwithstanding, it has many other areas of application in life. In agriculture, one of the systems of farming commonly practiced by African farmers is called 'Shifting Cultivation. In this method, a piece of land is cropped for one season and left to go fallow for two to three years before it could be used again.
  However, this Proverb here offers a special recommendation for farmers. The counsel in the Proverb pertains to virgin lands or fertile forest. So, it recommends that such lands could be cropped for two seasons (instead of the usual one season, under Shifting - Cultivation described above); before that land is left to go fallow.
  In other areas of life, the Proverb implies that any business, venture or deal that has proved to be successful, lucrative or profitable is worth continuing or sustaining. In business operations, where a particular product line has proven by performance to be successful, contributing hugely to the overall corporate prosperity, it is prudent to sustain investments in that direction.

MEANING: One who is invited to a meal or dinner often eats cautiously or carefully. LIFE APPLICATION:   In different aspects of our social life, every society has codes of behaviour expected of individuals. In the work place there are ethics of standard behaviour that govern each trade or practice. Certain behaviour of some individuals, for example, if not checked, may fall short of the required level of decorum.   Similarly, when people gather in social events such as marriage ceremonies or dinners, there is a standard of behaviour expected of those who are invited. No matter how hungry you are when invited to dinner, your behaviour must not portray you as a hungry man.
